A prominent historian by the Thai authorities charged with insulting the monarchy after he publicly had pleaded for reform of the monarchy. Somsak Jeamteerasakul, a lecturer at Thammasat University in Bangkok, is thereby formally charged with treason said a police spokesman. Treason is a serious crime in Thailand where more than 15 years prison sentence. The monarchy is an extremely sensitive issue in the politically divided nation, which is preparing for a tough election battle on 3 July.
